Can't say I've read "Justinian's Flea," no. (And, yes, you've nailed the apostrophe!) Sounds like one of those fascinating books that combine history and natural history. The "Feathers" book I'm finishing now, referenced above, does something like that in tracing the evolution of feathers, from dinosaur to contemporary birds, and the trade in such things as ostrich feathers, which before WW I were every fine lady's decor of choice -- and extremely expensive. When I've finished "Feathers," can I borrow your "Flea"? I might well have an itch then.

So many books, so little time. Have you read "Justinian's Flea"? (Is that a proper use of an apostrophe?) It's about a flea that killed about 35 million people and brought down the Roman Empire back in the 6th century. Kind of changed the history of the world. Interesting read.

You may be able to sell cheap pizzas via gorillas or gorilla masks. But take some products, brands, and audiences, up the ladder and see where gorillas stop being effective:
* Fast food
* Furniture dealers (especially those with cheap, gaudy furniture in the windows)
* Quickie church services (there's a very popular church in the same strip mall where the cheap pizza place is located)
* Econobox cars
* Tinmen (siding specialists who "just happen to be" in your neighborhood)

Your gorillas are nothing more than modern day sandwich boards. They appear, in one form or another, during every depression/recession or whatever you believe is happening. But surely there must be other topics of value to research in the heat of the South? Or, something may have boiled over in that Yankee head of yours?

Ach, well, I hope not. Even the ancient of days have their breath, their heart, their sinew. As you plod down the Tamiami Trail, keep your bleary eyes open for signs of life's absurdities. The behavior of the motorists. The mating dances of the birds and small mammals. The saliva that pools at your feet as your stumble on. All of these are miracles, everyday and unconscious but that we become conscious of them. Then, hallelujah, we can cackle and move on!
